UPR Submission on the Emerging Issues and Challenges of Nepalese Migrant Workers
Advocacy Forum, along with National Network for Safe Migration (NNSM), jointly submitted a report on the Emerging Issues and Challenges of Nepalese Migrant Workers to the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Report on 23rd March 2015. This report addresses Human Rights violations perpetrated by the State of Nepal and suffered by Nepali migrant workers. The report mainly focuses on generally poor, rural based and illiterate migrant workers that attend Middle Eastern countries and Malaysia. The submission also examines the status of the implementation of pertinent UPR recommendations (2011) by the Government of Nepal. Though there are a vast number of Human Rights violations in the context of foreign labour migration, the report focuses on 6 core human rights principles (Access to Justice; Liberty of Movement; Right to Equality and Non-discrimination; Right to Work and to Just and Favorable Conditions of Work; Right against Exploitation - Forced Labor, Slavery and Human Trafficking; and Protection against Human Rights Abuses Perpetuated by Non-State Actors) that are perceived to be either the most egregious violations or the violations that have the greatest adverse effects on the lives of workers.
